The Laboratory Assistant is responsible for assisting Laboratory Professionals with day-to-day pre-analytical laboratory operations. The Laboratory Assistant will never perform any function/s that require/s a CLS license or manufacturer specific training.

Responsibilities
Essential Functions: Essential functions encompass the required tasks, duties and responsibilities performed as part of the job and the reason the job exists.
The Laboratory Assistant is responsible for assisting Laboratory Professionals with specimen preparation, entering patient data in and maintaining the LIS (Laboratory Information System), and communicating with Health Center staff, additionally, the position requires reliability as to assigned tasks and attendance.
Process and handle specimens according to standard procedures without compromising specimen integrity.
Handle samples correctly and ensure positive specimen identification.
Enter the appropriate patient information and test orders into the laboratory information system (LIS).
Understand appropriateness of specimen rejection which does not meet acceptability requirements. Correctly identify all the reasons for rejection.
Document rejection and telephone correspondence by properly completing log sheets and entering in Orchard and EMR.
Communicate to a CLS / QA Supervisor all unexpected occurrences, corrective actions and incidents which may influence the quality of testing performance.
Understand proper inventory maintenance, including submitting and receiving purchase orders for laboratory supplies and count sheets to the Purchasing Department.
Ensure that the accessioning and processing areas are clean and organized.
Complete all tasks according to established laboratory policies and procedures in a timely manner.

Minimum Education:
High School Diploma or General Educational Development (GED) completion required.
Minimum Work Experience:
A minimum of 1 year of recent relevant clinical laboratory experience preferred.

Must thrive in a fast paced, rigorous environment with changing priorities.
Ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure.
Must demonstrate high level computer skills including; Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook. Electronic medical records experience may also be required.
