SALARY RANGE: $23.29/hour to $28.31/hour in five annual steps

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:  Under the direction of an Administrator of Student Services, assists a certificated teacher(s) or specialist(s) in providing behavior support to students; performs independent paraprofessional duties related to regular and special education students with significant behavioral concerns; performs instructional support and follow-up activities. Positions in this class are distinguished from other Paraeducator positions by assignment to a variety of Special Education and General Education classrooms throughout the district to implement behavioral intervention plans designed by district behavior specialists; provides specialized assistance requiring specific training in behavior-related programs; provides instruction to entry-level instructional assistants; assist supervisor on organizational and procedural issues, and perform other related duties as required.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade and demonstrated experience in working with children in a learning situation, preferably children with special needs. College-level training in child care, psychology, education, and training of atypical children is preferred. Forty hours of documented behavior training is preferred. Attendance at district-established ongoing training sessions and clinics are requirement for continued employment. ABA experience preferred.


THE EXAMINATION: Candidates are required to pass the Behavioral Instructional Support Assistant test which covers English usage and proficiency, simple arithmetic through elementary algebra, reading comprehension, and the ability to assist in instruction/behavior. Candidates may also be tested on the following: the ability to deal effectively with special education students, to understand problems and solve them; to follow written and oral directions; flexibility, patience, judgment, and sensitivity.
